So you decide it is time to update your family portrait. Now that you made the decision it is time to ask the important questions; Where do we take the portrait? When do we take it? What do we wear?
Coordination is the key!! When deciding what to wear it is important to decide your location first. If you want it to be outdoors in a park setting then casual outfits may be the best. Make sure you take in effect the season in determining the best outfits. The Smith family did a great job in coordinating their outfits for our session.
Our session took place at Braehead Manor in Fredericksburg, VA. This was an elegant and classy location with a historical look. So to add to the background the Smith family wore dark tones and dressed up for the occasion.
The outfits make these portraits stand out with a bold and classy statement. Imagine if they were wearing a casual jean and t-shirt outfit in these settings, it just would not feel the same. So with that said, if you have trouble deciding what to wear you can always ask your photographer and I can ensure you your portraits will stand above the rest.
When I am photographing family portrait sessions it is important that I capture all the breakdowns that you may want to give you a variety of different looks to choose from. For example the Smith family wanted portraits done of the entire family together, the mom and dad only, and then individuals of each member of the family. Typically when there is breakdowns this requires a longer session time. (click through the below gallery to see different breakdowns)
The important thing to remember when getting ready to take family portraits is plan ahead. Coordinate your outfits with each other and the environment you will be photographed. Ensure that what ever you choose that you are comfortable and have a great time taking your portraits.
